The 2012 BWF Japan Open finished on Sunday in the Japanese capital, Tokyo, with five gold medals up for grabs.

With China refusing to send any players to the tournament due to worsening relations with Japan, Malaysian superstar Lee Chong Wei was favourite to win the men's singles.

Boonsak Ponsana from Thailand proved to be a tricky opponent for the Olympic silver medallist but Wei eventually won his third Japan Open title 21-18, 21-18.

In the women's singles final the home faithful were hoping Eriko Hirose could get the better of Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan.

Hirose won the first game easily, but failed to defend her advantage in the next two games against her 18-year-old opponent, Tai eventually winning the match 9-21, 21-9, 21-14.

There was more disappointment for the Japan in the women's doubles as Poon Lok Yan and Tse Wing Suet of Hong Kong took gold with a 21-17 22-20 win over Shizuka Matsuo and Mami Naito.

South Korea took home gold in the men's doubles, Kim Ki-Jung and Kim Sa-rang beating Malaysia's Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong in two straight games, 21-16, 21-19.

Malaysian team of Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying won their first ever gold medal at BWF level as they beat Indonesia's Muhammad Rijal and Liliyana Natsir 21-12, 21-19 in the mixed doubles.
