An international field descended upon Singapore for the running of the Singapore Airlines International Cup.

The favourite heading into the 2000-metre run was French horse Cirrus Des Aigles, the highest-rated starter on Sunday having arrived with two wins from its last two starts at the Dubai Sheema Classic and Prix Ganay at Longchamps.

In the end, a French horse would win, but not the one that many expected.

Instead, Chinchon with French jockey Olivier Doleuze on board raced to the victory, holding off Hong Kong challenger Zaidan to win the 2012 Singapore Airlines International Cup in two minutes, 4.43 seconds.

The win for Chinchon, a Carlos Laffron-Parias-trained seven-year-old, made up for his fifth-placed finish in Singapore last year behind 2011 winner Gitano Hernando.

In the Krisflyer International Sprint, local horse 'Ato' came from the middle of the field to win in 1.10:57 seconds and give trainer Patrick Shaw the victory.

The South African-bred four-year-old Ato powered home past Mr Big to win by a length-and-a-half, with British-trained Secret Asset in third.
