  • Intro:

There was a major shock in the All England badminton championships on Sunday as women's world number one Wang Yihan was defeated by seventh-seeded Chinese compatriot Li Xuerui.

China's Qing Tian and Yunlei Zhao won the women's doubles, whilst Korean pair Jae Sung Jung and Yong Dae Lee won the men's in Birmingham, England.

There was a disappointing finish in the men's singles - China's Dan Lin clinching the win after Malaysian defending champion Chong Wei Lee had to retire through injury.

    Script:

The women's final at the All England badminton championships pitched China against China as seventh-seeded Li Xuerui took on world number one Wang Yihan.

Few expected Li to have much of a chance, but she put in a classy display to take the victory 21-13 21-19.

It was by far the biggest career win so far for the 21-year-old, following up last week's success in the German Open.

In the women's doubles finals, it was another all-Chinese affair - with second seeds Qing Tian and Yunlei Zhao taking on Xiaoli Wang and Yang Yu.

Wang and Yu entered the match holding a 7-1 head-to-head advantage, but after a tight first game it was Tian and Zhao who edged it, 21-17.

The second set was one-way traffic with Tian and Zhao looking imperious, romping home 21-12, 21-17 to clinch the victory.

China's Haifeng Fu and Yun Cai - the world number one pairing - had an intriguing match against Korea's Jae Sung Jung and Yong Dae Lee, second in the rankings.

The Koreans were in excellent touch and had game point in the first, but the Chinese showed their experience to sneak it 23-21.

Yet the Koreans didn't make the same mistake in the second game - surprisingly out-gunning the world number ones to easily take it 21-9.

And the pattern continued into the third - Jung and Lee simply too good as they wrapped up victory 21-23, 21-9, 21-14.

In the men's singles, China's Dan Lin took on Malaysia's Chong Wei Lee.

Lin held a 18-9 head to head advantage over the Malaysian, yet it was Lee who was the higher-ranked of the pair.

But it was Lin who held his nerve to take the advantage 21-19.

Defending champion Lee seemed to be struggling with the effects of a shoulder injury.

Lee couldn't continue and was forced to retire - Olympic and world champion Lin picking up his fifth title at the All England badminton championships.
