Adeline Baud of France took full advantage of the near-perfect conditions, clocking one minute 19.36 seconds.
Her combined time of 2:40.80 was good enough to grab the provisional lead from Austria's Lisa-Maria Zeller.
Few expected Norway's Ragnhild Mowinckel to feature on the podium after she clocked the seventh quickest time in Friday's first run.
But the 19-year-old put herself in medal contention with blistering run which slicied 0.78 of a second off Baud's time.
It proved to be good enough to capture gold.
Defending champion Sara Hector couldn't match the form which saw her top the timesheet on Friday.
The Swede had to settle for silver after a second run which left her 0.26 of a second behind Mowinckel.
There is more action from Italy on Sunday with the men's super-G
