Nurse wins it for Newport as Flynn celebrates new deal

Newport helped Michael Flynn celebrate his new contract with a win as George Nurse scored deep into stoppage time against Carlisle.

Flynn signed an extension through to 2022 on Thursday and after a tense clash at Rodney Parade, late substitute Nurse scored the only goal five minutes into time added on.

Nurse had only come on in the 87th minute as a replacement for Matt Dolan and his wonder strike from 30 yards out flew past a previously untested Adam Collin in the Carlisle goal. It won the game for the home side, protected their unbeaten home record and pushed them up to third in the table.

Even though there had been 11 places between the two teams before the game, it was the visitors who dominated for long periods and who looked the better side.

Padraig Amond shot narrowly over in the eighth minute for the best chance of the first half for the home team, while Jack Bridge fluffed his lines when through one-on-one with County keeper Tom King near the end of the half.

Hallam Hope had two good chances early in the second half before Mark O’Brien had to stretch full length six yards out to block a Jack Iredale shot in the 69th minute.

Nurse’s late effort was only the second on target for the home team but it proved decisive.
