Liverpool suffered a 3-0 defeat to Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final as Luis Suarez netted against his former club and Lionel Messi scored twice.
Jurgen Klopp’s team selection caused plenty of debate among Reds fans prior to kickoff with Roberto Firmino on the bench having recently returned from injury.
Henderson’s omission was another strange one as he opted for four midfielders in the shape of James Milner, Georginio Wijnaldum, Fabinho and Naby Keita.
And pundit and former Red Graeme Souness felt the decision would have left Henderson frustrated.
“The midfield’s an interesting one,” Souness said on Virgin Media Sport.
“Can I start with Henderson, who is the captain of your team.
“Not involved, is he fit? Is he 100 per cent fit?
“He’s entitled to be angry if he’s fit.
“He’s your captain, been outstanding the last few weeks.”
Joe Gomez also got the nod over Trent Alexander-Arnold - but Souness felt that was the right call to make.
“He’s left Trent Alexander out because he’s a young man whose best attributes is going forward and being on the front foot,” he added.
“Defensively, he’s still learning the game so he feels Gomez is the best defender.
“He’s not played a lot of football, Gomez, in the last few months.
“But he sees him as a better defender so that’s a common sense one I feel.”
Liverpool welcome Barcelona for the return leg at Anfield on Tuesday.
