United bosses have spent months talking with De Gea about a new long term deal.

But nothing has been finalised, meaning United will refuse to sell him this summer but be prepared to let him head into the final 12 months of his current £200,000-a-week deal.

United executive vice chairman Ed Woodward is understood to be relaxed about the scenario - and still confident the Spanish international will pen a new and improved deal at Old Trafford.

De Gea has been the stand out star for United in recent seasons to establish himself as the best keeper in the world.

Losing him would be a huge blow to United's chances of competing for the Premier League title next season.

Securing his future remains one of the club's priorities, but this will depend on United being willing to meet De Gea's wage demands of around £400,000-a-week.

Whatever happens with De Gea, there will be wholesale changes at United this summer.

Starsport understands new permanent boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is willing to axe up to seven stars as he looks to build a side capable of challenging for honours next season.

The likes of Matteo Darmian, Marcos Rojo, Eric Bailly, Alexis Sanchez and £52m flop Fred could all be sold.

United have also run out of patience with Spanish duo Juan Mata and Ander Herrera.

Mata and Herrera have been in talks with United about new contracts for 18 months, but no deals have been agreed.

The duo want significant wage hikes, but Woodward is not prepared to give them what they want.

Both are considered squad players and United have targeted signing two 'world class' midfielders this summer.

Mata has been linked with a move to Barcelona while Herrera is a target of Paris Saint Germain and has held provisional talks with the French champions.

Solskjær has held extensive talks with a Woodward about transfer targets and is confident of making some significant signings.

Those on his wanted list include Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Adrien Rabiot, Christian Eriksen and Kalidou Koulibaly.
