Man Utd's squad is the strongest since Sir Alex Ferguson retired – Bryan Robson

Manchester United legend Bryan Robson believes their current squad is the best since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down as manager in 2013.

United have begun the season in emphatic fashion, winning their opening three Premier League matches, registering 10 goals and conceding none.

In the process they remain the only club in England's top-division with a 100% record and Robson, who captained the Red Devils with great distinction, is impressed with the calibre of players at Jose Mourinho's disposal.

"It always depends on injuries throughout the year, but as far as I am concerned since Sir Alex left this is probably the strongest squad that I've seen," he told PA Sport.

"We've got pace, we've got power, but we've also got quality players.

"That helps to try and win titles, but Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham — these sort of teams are top-class teams.

"You've got to compete against them and do well against them, but I am quite confident that the boys can do that this year and we can compete against the best."

To date, the Portuguese tactician has used no fewer than 18 players, including summer signings Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukau who have become integral to Mourinho's set-up.

Across those players, however, only eight have featured in United's four matches – three in the Premier League and the UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid – with them being: David de Gea, Paul Pogba, Lukaku, Marcus Rashford, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Antonio Valencia, Marouane Fellaini and Matic.

Mourinho's second season

Robson and the United faithful will be hoping history repeats itself regarding their manager.

A well-travelled coach, Mourinho has won everywhere he's been at since establishing himself at Porto in the early 2000s, and remains the only manager to win the top-flight in England, Spain and Italy.

Signing a three-year contract last summer, the task facing him is to re-establish United as not only a force to be reckoned with in England but also Europe, with him delivering a Europa League and League Cup titles.

However, the Red Devils finished sixth last term, but as history has shown his teams always have their best season once he's had a year to establish himself.

Porto and Inter won the league and European Cup double whilst in both spells at Chelsea and Real Madrid saw him lift their respective championships.
