Zlatan Ibrahimovic: Striker will take pay cut to complete return to Old Trafford

The Swedish superstar was released from Old Trafford at the end of last season after suffering a serious knee injury in April.

Man Utd rejected the chance to trigger a 12-month extension in the deal Ibrahimovic signed when he joined them on a free transfer after leaving Paris St-Germain last summer.

Ibrahimovic had an operation in America and United bosses were told he would be out of action until the start of 2018.

But United allowed Ibrahimovic to return to the club's training complex to carry out his recovery and he has kept in close contact with Jose Mourinho.

The veteran striker is ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation and could be fit again by the end of November.

United boss Mourinho never wanted Ibrahimovic to leave the club in the first place and has told Old Trafford bosses he can still have an impact on the team.

Ibrahimovic earned in excess of £300,000-a-week last season - but is willing to accept a six month deal worth around £125,000-a-week.

The former Barcelona and Inter Milan ace is wanted by MLS outfit LA Galaxy, but remains desperate to play for United again.

Ibrahimovic scored 28 goals in all competitions last season to help United win the EFL Cup and Europa League title to secure Champions League qualification.

United spent £90m on landing Romelu Lukaku from Everton this summer and the Belgium international is now Mourinho's No.1 striker.

But Mourinho still values Ibrahimovic's influence in the dressing room and believes he can still have a big impact on the pitch when required.

United will be challenging on four fronts this season and Mourinho knows Ibrahimovic's experience and finishing abilities could be crucial in the second half of the campaign.
