The Toffees were playing Croatian side Hajduk Split at Goodison Park in the first leg of their qualifying match.
It had started off trouble-free and there was even a touching tribute to murder victim Rhys Jones in the 10th minute to mark the 10 years since he was killed in a gang shooting gone wrong.
But that was soon marred by the shocking violence by the away fans.
Video shows hordes of them charging towards the pitch as dozens of stewards attempt to hold them back.
HOOLIGANS: Video showed the Croatian fans throwing bottles and chairs at police
Bottles and a chair can be seen being hurled at the security staff, who were quickly joined by police, as the trouble flared.
The referee was forced to temporarily suspend the match and remove the players from the field while the hooligans were dealt with.
Hajduk players even went over to the away end to plead with their fans to behave but the problems continued.
INVASION: Some fans made their way onto the Goodison Park pitch
Thankfully authorities were able to calm the crowd down quickly and the game soon got back under way.
Everton were already 1-0 up thanks to a first club goal for summer signing Michael Keane.
A second from Idrissa Gueye put Ronald Koeman’s side in firm control as the match ended 2-0.
It is not yet known if any arrests have been made.
