20 years since Rivaldo's escape to Barcelona

August 15 marks the anniversary of one of the most difficult transfers in history of Spanish football, Rivaldo from Deportivo to Barcelona in 1997.

The Brazilian's exit has several parallels with that of his compatriot Neymar, with the roles reversed in 1997, as Deportivo were left reeling by Rivaldo's desire to leave and Barcelona's will to sign him.

Four million pesetas were paid by the Catalans to sign Rivaldo - around 24m euros in today's market- without actually negotiating with the Galician club. By paying his release clause, Barcelona had essentially removed the need to deal with Deportivo, much to their irritation.
