Bologna and Carpi somehow emerged unscathed from a frantic goalless draw at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara.
The early chances flowed freely with Amadou Diawara and Saphir Taider missing the mark for Bologna while Antonio Mirante did well to deny Carpi strikers Matteo Mancosu and Kevin Lasagna.
After the break Mattia Destro danced past the entire Carpi defence only to shoot wide and visiting right-back Gaetano Letizia fluffed a close-range opportunity before Emanuele Giaccherini and Daniele Gastaldello rattled posts for the hosts.
The result almost certainly guarantees ninth-placed Bologna top-flight survival while promoted Carpi are now four points shy of safety.
