A FOOTBALLER has died after being hit in the head by an object thrown from the crowd during a match.
TRAGIC: Albert Ebosse died after having a missile thrown at him from the crowd during an Algerian league match
Twentyfour-year-old Cameroonian Albert Ebosse was rushed to hospital after suffering the injury.
He was playing for home side JS Kabylie (JSK) and scored as they went down 2-1 to rivals USM Alger during a league match in Algeria.
As the final whistle blew angry home fans pelted the players with objects.
"The JSK player succumbed to a head injury after being hit in the head at the end of the meeting with USM Alger," his club confirmed.
USM have described the tragedy as "terrible" and sent their "deepest condolences".
"May Albert Ebosse rest in peace," they added.
Issa Hayatou, the president of the Confederation of African Football, has called for "exemplary sanctions" to be taken against those responsible for the shocking incident.
"My thoughts go out to the family and friends of this young man who enjoyed his job peacefully and went further to pursue his passion for football abroad," wrote Hayatou.
"African football cannot be the breeding ground for hooliganism whatsoever.
"We expect exemplary sanctions to be taken against this grave act of violence."
Ebosse joined JSK last summer and had earned six international caps, mostly for Cameroon's B team.
