Shearer: Mourinho just what BPL needs

England legend Alan Shearer thinks the Barclays Premier League has started to grow stale but believes Jose Mourinho can save it from further decay.

Mourinho is currently in charge of Spanish side Real Madrid but the 'Special One' has been heavily linked with a return to Chelsea in the summer.

And former England skipper Shearer is sure the Stamford Bridge hero will give the Premier League a much needed shot of adrenaline should he return.

Shearer feels with Manchester United running away with the title this season - and English sides failing to impress in Europe - the world's most popular football league has failed to live up to last season's competitive standard where Manchester City won the title on the final day.

"Jose Mourinho's return to England is not just what Chelsea needs but what the Premier League needs," he wrote in his column for The Sun.

"I know Manchester United fans will not agree, but it has gone a bit stale. Perhaps we were spoilt by that incredible finale 12 months ago.

"I have to say the ‘great battle for fourth' isn't quite what we expected to be talking about at this stage of the season.

"The only other thing we seem to have been debating of late is who is going to be declared the third-worst club in the division.

"It has been that case for some time with this title race basically over since the start of February and two sides cut adrift at the bottom.

"But I really believe we could be in for a feast next time around with Mourinho the main ingredient again."

Shearer predicts Chelsea - third in the Premier League table at the moment - would "immediately be title contenders" with the Portuguese tactician at the helm.

"His six years away have only served to enhance that [world class reputation]," Shearer said.

"A treble at Inter Milan - including the 2010 Champions League triumph - was quite something.

"I do not see his time at Real Madrid as a failure, either.

"After all he got the title away from all-conquering Barcelona, could have a second Copa Del Rey and has reached the last four of the Champions League three times. Quite why he would want to leave such a club like Real is beyond me.

"But their loss will undoubtedly be Chelsea's gain as he will reignite that club in terms of battling for the title.

"There is already a very good team in place at Stamford Bridge and with two or three additions they could be the ones to watch again.

"What Mourinho will also bring is that added spice which makes the Premier League football's most-watched soap opera.

"The guy is box office. Let's admit it we all love listening to him, whether we agree or disagree.

"He brings an edge to everything he touches. Everywhere he's been he has courted controversy. Throw him back into a pot which will already be stirred up by this summer's transfer window and it really has you licking your lips."

Mourinho was the most successful manager in Chelsea's history but left the club after falling out with owner Roman Abramovich in September 2007.
