MANCHESTER United boss Sir Alex Ferguson may have to give himself the hairdryer treatment - after he was involved in an embarrassing car prang.

The Reds manager was last year outspoken in banning young players from driving flashy Chevrolet sports cars after the firm offered first-teamers their choice of luxury motors.

But Sir Alex was forced to return to the club’s Carrington training ground with his tail between his legs following a bump - in his own Chevrolet 4x4.

It is understood that he scraped his luxury car against a wall and ended up losing his number plate.

Mechanics were called to repair the car last week and spare the manager’s blushes before any of his players could see it.

Accident ... Fergie had crash in his Chevrolet 4X4

Witnesses say Fergie, 71, left the Cheshire facility in his Chevrolet at 11.15am. But he returned at 12.55pm in the same vehicle - only this time it featured a number of tell-tale dents.

One fan said: “Sir Alex left after signing autographs but came back about 90 minutes later. His reg plate was broken and the bonnet was messed up.

”There was other damage to the front of the car too. It was a bit of a state.

”He had to stop at the barrier to ring the intercom to get in. A few fans who had gathered there started to go towards him but he wasn’t pleased and sped off.

”It looked like he was furious.”

The United boss was said to have been unharmed in the prang.

Last year first team players were offered Chevrolet motors after the US company was lined up as a future shirt sponsor.

But the manager, a strict disciplinarian, intervened and banned anyone under the age of 23 from opting for the 198mph Corvette model.

He had good reason to clamp down after a number of high-profile smashes involving stars.

A United source said: “He’s big on players avoiding scrapes on the road... but this time it was the manager who ended up with a dent to his car.”
