Serie A could be suspended if a player contracts coronavirus

Serie A has seen a host of matches postponed in recent weeks as a means of protecting its clubs, players and fans against the spread of the coronavirus.

Italian football was the first to be hit by the outbreak in Europe, and the government has ordered games to be played behind closed doors until at least April 3.

Now, the president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Gabriele Gravina, has mentioned the possibility of suspending Serie A in the event that a footballer contracts the coronavirus.

"If a player were to test positive for coronavirus? I would not rule out the suspension of the [Serie A] championship," Gravina stated.

"We cannot rule out anything or risk situations that we cannot foresee," he added.

The Italian national team's matches before the European Championship, against Germany and England, are also in doubt.

"It seems that the city of Nuremberg will request to postpone the game [against Germany]," Gravina added.

"In England there is a provision for quarantine.

"I hope that at least [the match can be played] behind closed doors."
