Russ Wilcox hails Scunthorpe’s work ethic

Interim Scunthorpe boss Russ Wilcox praised his side’s workmanlike performance after beating Forest Green 1-0.
Mark Cooper’s charges saw their play-off hopes suffer another huge blow after slipping to their eighth game without a win.
John McAtee scored the only goal of the game to wrap up the points for the Iron.
Wilcox said: ”It took hard work and organisation.
“We know Forest Green are a good footballing unit and we knew they’d have a lot of possession.
“Mark Cooper’s been there a while now so we knew what they’d be about. They’ve had a lot of time to work on things.
“We stood firm, first half was tricky but I thought second half we came out all guns blazing and we got the early goal.
“We changed the shape a bit and that worked better.
“We felt we were getting overrun in midfield and it really helped. It helped get Macca (McAtee) up the pitch further as well and he got his goal.
“I thought we looked fairly comfortable after it.
“You always want that second goal to put the game to bed and we had opportunities with Macca missing two one-on-ones.
“We never seem to get that second goal but we created opportunities and were resolute at the back.
“When he (fourth official) puts five minutes you know what they’re going to do. They put the ball into the box but we dealt with it.
“It’s great to get a win with a clean sheet again.
“I thought over the 90 minutes we were worthy winners.”
Cooper was left disappointed after the defeat.
“I feel frustrated,” reflected Cooper. “We were really comfortable in the first half and I thought it was a matter of time before we went ahead.
“But straight away we concede a horrendous goal to a long ball.
“It went straight down the pitch and got in behind us and they have a man free in the box.
“Then they have something to hold onto to. Throwing themselves in the way of things and getting blocks in.
“We weren’t clinical enough in the final third. We didn’t have enough urgency.
“The conditions were really blustery. It was difficult to try and get that quality with the ball.
“At half time I told them to stay in the game and we’d get a chance because I couldn’t see them scoring.
“It didn’t look like there was a goal coming unless it was a horrendous mistake and that’s what we gave them.”
