Non-league football player Jordan Sinnott has tragically passed away after losing his fight for life in hospital.

Sinnott passed away on Saturday after being found with a 'fractured skull' at 2am Saturday morning.

Nottinghamshire Police confirmed the Alfreton Town player, who was on loan at Matlock Town, was discovered unconscious with a suspected fractured skull following an incident in Retford.

Officers initially responded to reports of up to eight men and women being involved in a disturbance in the Dominie Cross pub car park in Grove Street shortly after 11.25pm on Friday.

They were later called to assist ambulance crews attempting to treat Mr Sinnott after he was discovered unconscious with a suspected fractured skull following a subsequent incident at around 2am in Market Place.

The midfielder was on loan to Matlock Town from Alfreton Town and was set to play Mickleover Sports on Saturday afternoon.

But the local derby in the BetVictor Northern Premier Division was postponed, as was Alfreton Town's match against Gateshead.

The 25-year-old had been hospitalised with his injuries and was put on a life support machine.

Matlock Town wrote a statement on Saturday evening: "We are very sorry to report that Jordan Sinnott has passed away just before 7pm this evening.

"His family and friends were with him at his bedside and we send our sincere condolences to them all at this very sad time.

"We understand from the Police that following a serious assault in Retford town centre yesterday evening Jordan was found unconscious with a suspected fractured skull. He was taken to hospital where he was treated for the injuries and put on a life support machine.

"The news that his condition was very serious and he was on a life support machine was received as players arrived for the game at Mickleover and after discussion with the Players, League and Mickleover it was agreed that the match should be postponed to a future date."

Nottinghamshire Police have confirmed that a man was arrested after the incident and a murder enquiry has been launched.

They said: "Nottinghamshire Police first attended the Dominie Cross public house in Grove Street, Retford following a report of a group of up to eight men and women having been involved in a disturbance in the pub car park just after 11.25pm on Friday 24 January.

"Officers were later called to assist ambulance crews who were attempting to treat Mr Sinnott after he was found unconscious with a suspected fractured skull following a subsequent incident at around 2am in the town’s Market Place. He remains in hospital where he is continuing to be treated for life-threatening injuries.

"A 27-year old man sustained a suspected broken nose during the incident, while a 44-year old man received a suspected broken jaw.

"A 27-year old man who was arrested shortly after the incident remains in police custody while detectives continue their enquiries into both incidents."

Sinnott's parent club Alfreton have also released the following statement.

It read: "We are saddened and heartbroken to report that Jordan passed away just before 7pm this evening.

"His family and friends were with him at his bedside and we send our sincere condolences to them all at this very sad time.

"Jordan was a model footballer and an exceptional talent during his time at the Impact Arena and had a close affinity with both the manager, assistant and the players he took the field with.

"The club would ask for privacy to be respected to all at the Reds and to Jordan’s family and friends during this delicate time.

"Rest easy Sinbad, we will never forget you."

Sinnott, the son of former Huddersfield captain Lee Sinnott, came through the ranks at the Terriers.

He made his first-team debut in 2013 against Leicester in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The Bradford-born star had loan spells at the likes of Altrincham and Bury before moving onto Altrincham permanently in 2015.

The following year he joined Halifax, which was followed by a short stint at Chesterfield.

In 2018, Sinnott arrived at Alfreton before moving to Matlock Town on loan this season.

His father had spells at Crystal Palace, Watford and Bradford before managing the likes of Port Vale, Gainsborough Trinity and Altrincham, where he coached his son.

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire sent his condolences: "Such sad news. My thoughts are with his family and friends. RIP."
