Lincoln boss Appleton disappointed over ‘blatant handball’ miss at Coventry

Angry Lincoln boss Michael Appleton lamented a “blatant” officiating error which cost his side a penalty in Saturday’s 1-0 Sky Bet League One defeat at Coventry.

Imps forward Tyler Walker saw his effort controversially cleared off the line with the visitors ferociously appealing for a penalty.

The incident occurred early in the second half with Coventry already ahead through Zain Westbrooke’s clinical strike.

“Their lad saved it on the line with his hand, no doubt about it,” said Appleton. “It was an absolute blatant handball, it was a penalty.

“The referee was on the edge of the box, but the linesman was looking right at it. You don’t get any more blatant than that.

“He’s stopped a goal and it’s tough to take because we didn’t get the penalty. If we get the penalty then they’re a man down as well – so it’s tough to take.”

Despite being disappointed with the penalty not being given, Appleton was pleased with the way his side bounced back in the second half.

“We didn’t come out of the blocks in the first half and it was frustrating,” added Appleton. “I spoke to the players at half-time about showing a bit of personality and character.

“Second half I was delighted with the way they went about their business.

“Regardless of how poorly we played first half and how well we played second half, it comes down to luck sometimes – it’s fine margins.”

Westbrooke’s goal ended promotion-contenders Coventry’s frustrating three-game winless run.

Mark Robins’ Sky Blues are two points off the automatic promotion spots.

“I thought we were brilliant, really good,” Robins said. “They had a 10-minute spell in the second half but we saw it through.

“We don’t score enough but what we do do is we’re really brave. Some of the passing movements and efforts were outstanding.

“I’m delighted with it and it’s bravery that we’re showing again.

“From now until the end of the season I want them to go out there and play without fear.

“There were signs of fear because of late goals we’ve conceded away from home primarily.

“The clean sheet was needed and the three points was really needed.

“I’m delighted with the result and the performance was one of the best all season.

“It was key to win because we lost the last game. We were in control of it and threw it away, so I’m pleased we didn’t do that again.”
