Coleman critical of Accrington players after draw against 10 men

Accrington manager John Coleman slammed his “sloppy” side as they drew 0-0 away to Coventry after failing to make the most of having an extra man following Maxime Biamou’s straight red card after 68 minutes.

A game low on chances and quality saw each side leave feeling frustrated they did not do more to take all three points.

Coleman said: “We didn’t make enough chances, we didn’t look strong on the ball like we were capable of cutting them up.

“We can play miles better than that, we had a couple of great chances and didn’t take them. We were very sloppy with our play, gave the ball away, got a bit disjointed.

“I thought we were doing OK until they got their man sent off then they upped their game and we dropped off, ordinarily coming here you are happy with a point but when playing against 10 for 25 minutes, you’re disappointed we didn’t make that pressure count and we didn’t pin them back.

“Can’t fault them for effort but decision making, position play, passes were out of sync today and that’s not like us.

“It was quite even today, and I don’t think either side deserved to win or lose the game today. While we’re unhappy we didn’t get the three points, we can improve that’s for sure.”

Joe Pritchard nearly gave the visitors the lead when he dispossessed Michael Rose early on and found himself clear. However, the resulting effort was tame and straight at Marko Marosi.

Callum O’Hare had the ball in Stanley’s net after 74 minutes but it was ruled out for a foul in the build-up.

Amadou Bakayoko nearly scored twice but each time his composure let him down as he blazed one free effort at goal over and saw a one-on-one opportunity well saved by Dimitar Evtimov.

Biamou was given his marching orders for what looked like an elbow on Stanley defender Mark Hughes after 68 minutes.

Coventry manager Mark Robins said: “I thought we controlled the game from start to finish.

“Then we were up against it with 10 men, but saw the game out – positives are a clean sheet, we haven’t lost the game.

“They created a few chances, we created some but were not able to take them.

“You know against these is not going to be a great spectacle, we’ve tried, but not had that cool head in front of goal.

“I thought we played some brilliant football from back to front but we just didn’t manage to get the win for whatever reason.

“We are still sixth, a clean sheet, so that’s a positive, and with 10 men for quite a while.”
