Chesterfield pull further clear of trouble with win over Magpies

Chesterfield continued their steady climb away from the Vanarama National League relegation zone after beating high-flying Notts County 1-0 at the Proact Stadium.
Gevaro Nepomuceno’s first-half volley settled the clash as the Spireites made it four wins from their last five league games – having previously only won once since April.
In-form County came into the match in fifth spot and having picked up 13 points from a possible 15 in the last month, and they looked the more likely scorers early on.
Kyle Wootton curled a shot just wide for the visitors before Kristian Dennis drew a good low save out of Chesterfield goalkeeper Shwan Jalal.
However, against the run of play, Chesterfield took the lead in the 27th minute when Scott Boden’s cross from the right found the unmarked Nepomuceno at the far post, and he slid in to volley past Sam Slocombe.
That was the on-loan Oldham winger’s first goal for the club and it proved to be the winner as County struggled – and ultimately failed – to find an equaliser.
Magpies defender Richard Brindley saw his second-half effort held by Jalal before the unmarked Mitchell Rose headed a late corner wide at the far post.
