Jason Cummings’ first-half strike earned Shrewsbury a 1-0 win over Sunderland.
The Black Cats created an early chance but Aiden McGeady fired over after being picked out by Denver Hume’s inviting cross from the left.
Chris Maguire then drove a shot over the bar from long range before Shrewsbury took the lead in the 22nd minute as Josh Laurent’s run and cross from the left set up Cummings to find the bottom corner from 10 yards.
Cummings then tested Sunderland goalkeeper Lee Burge with a free kick from 25 yards.
The visitors were close to an equaliser just before the break when Chris Maguire’s effort from the edge of the penalty area hit a post.
Maguire threatened for Sunderland again early in the second half as his shot was turned away by home goalkeeper Max O’Leary before Will Grigg was off target with a shot on the turn.
O’Leary then produced fine late saves from Luke O’Nien and Max Power as Shrewsbury stood firm to claim three points.
