Northampton continue winning run with Cambridge scalp

Northampton made it three wins in a row with a 2-0 home victory over Cambridge.
Both goals came in the first half as Harry Smith’s fine finish and an own goal from George Taft lifted the Cobblers to within one place of the top seven.
Cambridge goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov was called into action to tip over Scott Wharton’s header before opposite number David Cornell produced an equally good stop from Paul Lewis midway through the first half.
Northampton moved in front after 26 minutes when Smith latched onto Nicky Adams’ through ball and applied a composed finish into the bottom corner.
Mitov was quick off his line to deny Smith a second but the Cobblers striker played a role in doubling the lead when his cross was diverted into the net by Taft in first-half stoppage time.
Mitov stood tall to prevent Smith adding a third shortly after half-time while Cornell was at his best to thwart Marc Richards on his return to Sixfields as Northampton kept a third straight clean sheet.
