Massimiliano Allegri is in line to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United, according to reports in Italy.
Massimiliano Allegri could bring Mario Mandzukic and Emre Can with him to Manchester United if he replaces Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
It was reported by Tuttosport on Wednesday that Allegri is “very close” to joining United.
Allegri left Juventus at the end of last season after five years - and five Serie A titles - at the club.
He is said to be learning English while out of work and ostensibly longs for a job in England.
Solskjaer is under increasing pressure at United after the club’s worst start to a league season in 30 years and fears he could be fired if United suffer a heavy defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.
Mauricio Pochettino is still favourite to eventually succeed Solskjaer but Allegri’s odds have been slashed in light of the claims from Italy.
Whichever manager occupies the Old Trafford hotseat, club executives are aware the team needs new recruits in order to become title challengers again.
But if Allegri was to arrive in Manchester, he purportedly has two signings already lined up.
Tuttosport state that Mandzukic would follow Allegri to United, if he is not already there.
United had talks over the Croatian striker in the summer and are keen to re-open them in January after struggling with just three forward options.
Allegri was fond of Mandzukic during his stay at Juventus, converting him into an adaptable frontman who regularly made goal contributions.
The other player Allegri would try to sign is Emre Can, who has largely been maligned by Maurizio Sarri.
The slick midfielder was left out of the Champions League squad by the Italian after revelling in a defensive midfield role under Allegri.
Can is keen to move on from Turin and is open to joining United despite his ties with arch rivals Liverpool.
Mandzukic has two 20 months left on his Allianz Stadium contract while Can is pinned down for a further year.
