Middlesbrough will be without skipper George Friend and midfielder Jonny Howson for the home clash with Reading.
The pair have undergone minor operations for a ruptured tendon and a hernia respectively.
Striker Rudy Gestede is also sidelined after suffering a hamstring injury on international duty with Benin, while left-back Hayden Coulson is yet to return to fitness after a tendon issue.
Midfielder Paddy McNair has returned from Northern Ireland duty unscathed and should feature as boss Jonathan Woodgate looks to secure a second home win of the season.
Defender Matt Miazga remains out of action for Reading due to a hamstring issue that is not expected to be resolved for at least two weeks.
Midfielder Josh Barrett is unlikely to make the squad as he has missed training this week through illness.
Striker George Puscas impressed in Romania’s Euro 2020 qualifiers against Malta and Spain and he should start for the Royals.
Left-back Tyler Blackett has returned to training following injury and will hope to be involved.
