David Artell sets 50-point target after Crewe go top with victory over Crawley

Crewe boss David Artell said his first target for the season was to reach 50 points after making it three wins in a row with a 2-1 victory at Crawley.

Bez Lubala drove the hosts into the lead in the 16th minute, but Ryan Wintle replied before the interval and Paul Green headed the winner 10 minutes after the break.

Crewe now top the table after four games but Artell played down the achievement and said:” We are nine points closer to 50 points.

“We need to get to 50 points as soon as possible, it is our first target.”

Crewe lost the corresponding game last season 3-0 after dominating possession, and Artell admitted he feared something similar after his men failed to take early chances.

He added: “At one stage I thought back to last season’s game as we were so on top.

“For the first 25 minutes Crawley only had three kicks of the ball and we could have been three or four goals to the good.

“But we scored two good goals, both well worked against a Crawley side who will be OK. They have some good players in their forward ranks.”

Crawley head coach Gabriele Cioffi focused on the positives after his men slipped to their first defeat since the opening day of the season.

The Italian said: “We have to be positive and it was another good performance.

“We have lost to a good side and the Crewe players have played together for three years.

“Our performance was good but can be better; there are a lot of positives.”

Former Birmingham midfielder Lubala now boasts four goals in as many league games and Cioffi is delighted with the start made by the 21-year-old.

He said: “It was another good performance by Bez and another great goal. I wanted him and believe in his skill.

“I was pleased with our  performance but disappointed with the result. Now we must show the same spirit (at Leyton Orient on Saturday).”
