Darren Ferguson hails ‘outstanding goals’ as Peterborough earn first win

Darren Ferguson felt Peterborough fully deserved their first win of the season as two “Premier League quality goals” saw off Southend.
Two second-half goals in quick succession from Mo Eisa and Ivan Toney saw Posh triumph 2-0 at Roots Hall against the struggling Shrimpers, who have yet to pick up a point.
And Ferguson was pleased with his side’s form in front of goal.
“What won us the game was two goals of real outstanding quality and I’m really pleased,” said Ferguson.
“The goals from Eisa and Toney were of the highest quality, they were of Premier League quality in fact.
“Southend is a tough place to come regardless of how they have been doing but we fully deserved to get our first win.
“We need to make sure we go and build on this now but we’ve scored two good goals and got a clean sheet so it’s been a good night.”
Eisa fired Posh in front in the 55th minute and, moments later, Toney grabbed a second to condemn Southend to a fourth successive league defeat of the season.
Shrimpers boss Kevin Bond still thought his side played well.
“I understand everyone’s frustration but in isolation I thought we played well tonight,” said Bond. “I’m really disappointed to have lost the game.
“It’s compounding an already difficult position with our form at Roots Hall and the fact we are unable to keep a clean sheet.
“It weighs heavily on everyone and the longer we go the harder it becomes, but we need to turn it around.
“We have a number of new players and we are trying to change their mentality and resolve.
“But regardless of what happens in the immediate future, with the group of players we’ve got I wouldn’t have a worry about Southend’s situation in the league and where they will be.
“I’m completely confident everything will be fine come the end of the season.”
