Clough praises Broadhead after forward’s double earns win

Burton manager Nigel Clough believes there is plenty more to come from Nathan Broadhead after the Everton loanee guided his side to a 2-1 comeback victory at Gillingham.

Broadhead scored the first senior goals of his career on his full league debut with two in the space of three minutes as the visitors recovered after going behind to an Ouss Cisse effort in the seventh minute to secure the win.

The result gives Burton their first three points of the Sky Bet League One campaign and Clough was delighted with the performance of the Brewers new boy.

“He’ll remember today for a long time,” he said.

“He’s been curling a few goals in like his opener today throughout the week in training. It was a lovely goal.

“We’re more impressed with his second goal, to be honest – the way he got from the position he was in to tap the ball in was promising. He’ll get more goals if he continues to do that.”

Clough’s side kicked off the season with a disappointing home defeat to Ipswich made worse when Stephen Quinn was sent off with 12 minutes to go for a second yellow card.

But, despite falling behind early against Gillingham and having to deal with tricky blustery conditions, Clough was impressed by his side’s ability to fight even if he admits they should have been more clinical.

He added: “It’s a deserved victory, a deserved three points. It’s funny – towards the end of the first half I was thinking that we had given a daft goal away and missed a penalty, but there was nothing wrong with the performance. Away from home, in these conditions, it was a really good performance.

“We should have had more goals today – we will have enough tight games this season – this should have been a 3-1 or 4-1 today.”

For Gillingham, their winless start to the league season continued and assistant manager Paul Raynor was at a loss as to explain why his side struggled after taking the lead.

He said: “I’m not happy with it at all today. We were second best all over the pitch. You’ve got to give Burton a lot of credit – they were organised, solid and they hurt us in key areas.

“A lot of that was down to us – the basics were not there, our composure was not there. They controlled the game for large periods and that’s disappointing.

“We lacked intensity today. I was on the sidelines trying to get us going. That’s how we want to play – with pace, power and intensity.

“We didn’t have any of that today, our levels dropped from what we expect and how they were against Doncaster last week. Sometimes you can’t put your finger on why that happens.”
