Elliott Whitehouse and Max Wright fire Grimsby to victory

Second-half goals from Elliott Whitehouse and Max Wright gave Grimsby a 2-0 victory at Morecambe in Sky Bet League Two.

A close-range finish from Whitehouse in the 68th minute and an injury-time strike from substitute Wright was enough to give the Mariners the points.

Midfielder Whitehouse opened the scoring with a bizarre goal.

Morecambe’s defenders looked to play the offside trap from a right-wing free-kick but there was no flag and Whitehouse was one of four Grimsby players in the box to tap home the ball from close range.

From there the game opened up as Morecambe looked for an equaliser and Cole Stockton saw a goal-bound shot blocked but the Grimsby defence stayed firm, allowing the Mariners to score a breakaway second five minutes into added time.

The Shrimps had pushed everyone forward including goalkeeper Barry Roche and the ball broke for Wright who was able to slide it into the empty net from 30 yards.

Grimsby started the game sharply and Morecambe midfielder Rhys Oates reacted well to block an effort at full stretch in only the third minute.

Morecambe hit back with Alex Kenyon drilling a shot wide and Adam Buxton forcing James McKeown into the game’s first save with a free-kick from distance.

It was Grimsby who continued to look the more threatening with new signing James Hanson in the thick of the action and from one of his lay-downs Ludvig Ohman looked sure to score but Luke Conlan produced a vital last-gasp block.
