Sunderland back on track with comfortable Doncaster win

Sunderland got their push for a top-two finish back on track with a comfortable 2-0 Sky Bet League One home win over Doncaster.

The Black Cats made an ideal start, with Celtic loanee Lewis Morgan breaking the deadlock after just seven minutes. Charlie Wyke nodded down Aiden McGeady’s cross and Morgan drilled home a fine finish from the edge of the area.

Luke O’Nien went close from distance as Sunderland dominated the first half, and the hosts deservedly doubled their lead shortly after the half-hour mark.

Doncaster goalkeeper Marko Marosi failed to get anywhere near the ball as he charged from his line in an attempt to meet Max Power’s cross and, after Jimmy Dunne won a flick-on, Wyke was left with the simple task of rolling into an empty net.

The visitors hadn’t threatened at that stage, but they came close on the stroke of half-time, with Danny Andrew curling a free-kick against the base of the right-hand post.

Sunderland also hit the woodwork six minutes into the second half, with Bryan Oviedo driving forward on the overlap before drilling a low strike across the face of goal.

The result sees Sunderland end the day two points adrift of second-placed Barnsley, while Doncaster have a four-point cushion in the final play-off spot, although seventh-placed Peterborough have a game in hand.
