He was given the award for services to football after England reached the last four of the competition for the first time since 1990.

Having made a name for himself as a snappy dresser by wearing a waistcoat during the World Cup, he was equally well-attired to receive his OBE from Prince Charles.

Southgate joked that he would not be putting on his waistcoat after the World Cup but he did make an exception for the royal family.

He said: “It’s a very proud moment. I think I’ve been involved in football for 30 years so part of me is proud for everybody that helped me through that whole period and the clubs I served, and the coaches and teachers that helped me.

"Of course I’m aware that the recognition is as much for last summer and the work with the team.

"I’m very grateful to all the players and all the support team that work with me, because I’m here representing them really.”

It comes after England captain Harry Kane, who was top scorer at the World Cup, was given an MBE last week.

Since the World Cup, England have climbed up to fourth in FIFA’s world rankings following wins over the Czech Republic and Montenegro during Euro 2020 qualifying.

Southgate received praise on social media but others pointed out that England still failed to win.

One wrote “Surprised he wasn’t knighted! The occasions when they played anyone decent at the World Cup, they lost all 3, but well done on your OBE.”

Another put it: ”Giving Harry Kane and Gareth Southgate the OBE for reaching World Cup semis is too much.”
