The Frenchman was sent off in Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat in Belarus tonight in their round of 32 Champions League clash.

Lacazette elbowed Aleksandar Filipovic in the face, meaning he will miss the second leg at the Emirates later this month.

And the Gunners striker has apologised for seeing red against BATE tonight.

He wrote on Twitter: “Letting the team down like that is the worst feeling..

"I should have stayed calm but it’s not always easy… Sorry.

"There are still 90 minutes to play and I believe that my teammates will make it to the next round… #COYG #Laca.”

Arsenal fans were quick to defend Lacazette after he apologised for being sent off.

One said: “Very big of you to apologise Laca.”

Another added: “Don’t worry boss… all good.”

"Believe me mate, I understand your frustration. It’s not easy to stay calm when you support Arsenal,” a fellow fan wrote.

Another added: “S** happens Laca. Chin up big man. Take this opportunity to chill and come back stronger. All the best.”

Ex-Arsenal defender Martin Keown was vocal after the Gunners’ defeat, insisting Unai Emery’s men weren’t at the races.

"It was as poor as I can remember, certainly under Emery. Bate, you have to give them credit," he said.

"Arsenal just didn't have the penetration. They were so sloppy. They have got to do better than this.

"Arsenal had so much possession but there was so many stray passes. The pitch is not an excuse. That's a very disappointing result."

The Gunners face BATE on Thursday, February 21 as Emery’s men hope to reverse the scoreline.

Arsenal then return to Premier League action against Southampton.
