Oldham in good shape for new manager – Pete Wild

Pete Wild believes Paul Scholes will be taking over a side willing to learn after the Oldham caretaker manager appeared to end his temporary spell in charge with a 3-0 win at Crawley.

Former Manchester United and England midfielder Scholes has been cleared to become Oldham’s new manager by the English Football League, Press Association Sport understands.

The EFL ruled there was no issue with Scholes managing the Latics while having a 10 per cent stake in National League club Salford, who could be in the same division as Oldham next season.

The 44-year-old did not attend the League Two clash at Crawley on Saturday,  but was understood to be watching it online, and Wild believes the club is perfectly set up for him should he take charge.

Wild, 33, said: “The new man is taking over a resilient squad with a passion and willing to learn.

“I can learn from anybody. I can learn from the new manager.

“I am over the moon to go out on a winning note, as I think it’s my last game.

“To the new manager I would say, ‘all the best’. They are a hard-working bunch to work with.”

Three goals in the last 16 minutes from Johan Branger-Engone, substitute Zak Dearnley and Gevaro Nepomuceno gave Oldham their first league win in four games.

Wild said: “The substitutions changed the game and allowed us to go on and win.

“I thought the goals would come. Now with our additions I feel we have  players who can change games in League Two.

“This experience is something I’ve really enjoyed and it’s made me a better coach and a person.”

Crawley have only won one of their last six matches and sit nine points above the relegation zone.

But head coach Gabriele Cioffi is more confident of survival now than before the transfer window.

The Italian said: “My job is to improve the team and we have to turn the page and work hard.

“We had our chances, but at 3-0 we have to shut up. We have to be more effective in the box.

“I am confident about my style of play and I am more confident than before the window.”

Cioffi, who has been in charge of Crawley for five months, felt that Scholes would have been pleased with Oldham’s display.

He added: “He is an icon of football, a legend of Manchester and he will be pleased with his performance.

“He will bring different ideas. He will raise the profile of the division and it will get more attention.”
