Three reasons to be cheerful for Jolley

Grimsby manager Michael Jolley felt his side deserved the three points after beating Yeovil 3-1 at Huish Park.

Wes Thomas scored his 10th goal of the season in the ninth minute, heading home from Luke Hendrie’s cross.

Yeovil defender Adel Gafaiti then diverted Elliot Embleton’s driven cross into his own net, before the home side were reduced to 10 men when Craig Alcock was sent off for a second bookable offence after fouling Jordan Cook.

Kristian Dennis chipped goalkeeper Stuart Nelson to add a third, while Alex Fisher headed in a late consolation for Yeovil.

Jolley said: “We deserved the win overall. We started the game on the front foot and got ourselves ahead. Macca (James McKeown) had one big save to make in the first half but most of the chances were probably ours. We were pleased to go in 2-0 up at half-time, it probably could have been more.

“We’re disappointed we didn’t finish off some of the chances we created. The positive is we’re creating these chances and look a threat with the movement we’ve got. That’s pleasing but of course you want to finish the moves off when you can.

“On another day we might have scored more but to come away from home and score three is a good achievement. We haven’t done that too often this season. Overall, we have to be pleased with the progress we’re making.”

On the first goal, Jolley added: “It was a great ball from Luke (Hendrie) who is playing extremely well at the moment. He’s been one of our most consistent players all season and he’s really showing everyone what a good player he is.”

Yeovil manager Darren Way believes his side need to take more responsibility for performances.

Way said: “We’re very disappointed with the two goals. We didn’t get tight and press them hard enough. We’ve should have pressed the cross, then we lost a marker in the box and find ourselves 1-0 down. Then we have the same situation from a throw on the opposite side.

“They play four or five passes and we just didn’t have the belief to get in their faces and make it ugly.

“In the second half we had good momentum and then get a man sent off. The players have had a few harsh words with each other and it’s important they take as much responsibility as I am.

“We’ve got to see through this and we need a real, competitive spirit. Every single player has got to take responsibility.

On the fans’ boos at full-time, Way added: “Unfortunately I’ve had that for probably three years now in certain spells. The objective is to stay in the Football League.

“I don’t expect them to get behind me because of the run of results. All I can ask is they get behind the team.”
