Derek Adams glad to see Plymouth moving on up

Derek Adams was pleased to see his Plymouth side take a point from a home clash against high-flying Portsmouth.

Argyle maintained their remarkable 2019 form with a 1-1 come-from-behind draw against third-placed Pompey to edge up another place in the table.

Delighted boss Adams said: “We have moved ourselves up another place to 15th after taking another point off another top side following our win at Peterborough last week.”

Graham Carey cancelled out Ben Close’s opener with a superbly-struck free-kick from 25 yards in the 70th minute.

Adams added: “There were two very good sides out there on show, both technically good teams.

“Both teams trying to find ways of winning the match and eventually Portsmouth were able to get a head start – a ball into the box, a header away and a very good finish from Close from the edge of the box.

“We had to chase the game after that and got a free-kick on the edge of the area.

“It was a magnificent strike from Graham Carey to put it into the top corner.

“We went on from there and probably finished the stronger of the two teams.

“I thought we were unfortunate not to have got the winner.

“In saying that, Portsmouth may have countered because that’s open to them as (Jamal) Lowe and Curtis at the other end of the pitch can get away from anybody.

“Portsmouth are at the top end of the table for a reason, they are an accomplished football side.

“We had to be at it, we had to stop them from playing and we had 60 per cent of the possession, which is not something you normally get against them.”

Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett said: “When you are where we are in the table you obviously want wins. Overall it was a good performance by us.

“If you take the last two games in isolation they are two very good draws for us. A point against Doncaster and another here against a side who have won five of the last six.

“They are very good signs for the future.

“It was a difficult game for us coming here because they are the form side in the division.

“We created some very good chances and their keeper made some very good saves.

“There were many positives and as we get the new lads up to speed and ready they will give us good alternatives moving forward.

“We went 1-0 up and got our noses in front before conceding a questionable free-kick against Nathan Thompson.

“But I’ve got to say it was a a great free-kick, a great goal from Carey, to level it.

“We had chances to go 2-0 up before that with (Omar) Bogle, where the keeper has managed to smother it.

“Those small things just didn’t go for us and that’s probably the difference between a win and a draw.”
