Cioffi: ‘No formal offers’ for in-demand Crawley striker Palmer

Crawley head coach Gabriele Cioffi said there had been no formal offers for Ollie Palmer after the Reds’ top scorer scored the winner in the 1-0 home win over Cheltenham.

Former Lincoln striker Palmer has been linked with Bradford, Forest Green and Colchester but Cioffi said he was part of his plans and he wanted more from him.

The 26-year-old forward, returning from a five-match suspension, settled the issue by converting a 39th minute penalty after he chested down a long ball onto the hand of Jordon Forster.

That brought Palmer’s tally for the season to twelve, and Cioffi said: “It is not a surprise to hear that other clubs are interested.

“I don’t want to sell him and there has been no formal offers for him.

“I was happy with his performance but I want more.”

Italian Cioffi, who wants to add to his squad with two new signings in January, feels Crawley have made a “perfect start” to the New Year with two successive wins.

He added: “I am happy and pleased for the boys and that is now three clean sheets in a row.

“There is a long way in front of us and we know we have to work hard.”

Cheltenham boss Michael Duff felt certain his side deserved at least a point from the game.

The Northern Irishman was disappointed that good approach work was not topped off with goals and said: “It was a soft penalty.

“We could have had two ourselves and also had one cleared off the line. It was not deliberate hand ball; there was no movement towards the ball.

“We did enough to get a point, but we are getting better. When I first came in we were getting beat comfortably.

“We played well and got beat; a few things went against us.”

Duff does not yet know the extent of the achilles injury suffered by midfielder Nigel Atangana who had to be stretchered off.

He added: “It is too early to comment.”

Duff is encouraged that the players, previously unbeaten in six league games, are believing in themselves.

He said: “Our play looked really nice but we didn’t threaten enough in the final third.”
