Scunthorpe looking up rather than looking down, says McCall

Scunthorpe boss Stuart McCall hopes his side are on the up after a third successive victory moved them out of the League One relegation zone.

Goals from James Perch and Levi Sutton secured the Iron a 2-1 triumph over Coventry – capping an excellent week for the club on the back of wins over Wycombe and Peterborough and the arrival of five new signings in three days since the transfer window opened.

“I think there’s been a bit of belief from the new signings and a couple of good results, so it was important we built on that with a victory today,” said McCall.

“Getting the win keeps things bubbling and there’s a better atmosphere around the whole club, which is natural when you’re winning.

“We’re building momentum, confidence and belief – but credit to the squad because they’ve always stuck at it.

“A lot of the goals we were conceding were through individual errors, which does sink things, but you’ve got to get up, stick your chest out and go again and thankfully we’ve done that.

“There’s still a long way to go, but we’re looking up and hopefully we’ll continue too with more performances like that.”

Perch put the Iron in front in the 67th minute via a deflected shot, after being teed up by George Thomas, and Levi Sutton’s first senior goal seven minutes later had the hosts in control.

Days after turning his loan move to the Sky Blues into a permanent deal, Conor Chaplin pounced on a loose ball in the Scunthorpe penalty area to nod his side back into the game with 12 minutes to play, but despite a flurry of late pressure they could not find an equaliser.

Coventry boss Mark Robins cited the Iron’s experience and nous as the biggest factor in why his “naive” side saw a three-match winning run come crashing to a halt.

He said: “That performance was exactly what you’d expect from a side that contains so many young players.

“Scunthorpe have a lot of experience and they made us work hard away from the ball and towards our own goal.

“There were good things to come out of the game, but we’ve got to make sure we learn from it.

“I don’t want us to show any fear for the rest of the season. We have to go out and play.

“Scunthorpe have conceded a lot of goals this season and were fragile, but now they’ve won three on the bounce and we allowed that to happen.

“It’s always frustrating to lose, but I think it’s understandable when you look at the make up of the group.

“There was a naivety about us, but we have to expect that. We can’t expect them to perform like they are experienced players.

“It’s still possible for us to get into the play-offs and that’s what I want us to aim for.”
