Stevenage boss Dino Maamria disappointed after recent refereeing decisions

Stevenage manager Dino Maamria vented his anger over recent refereeing decisions despite his side kicking off the new year with a 1-0 win over Newport.

The Boro boss was incensed after Kurtis Guthrie was shown a straight red card by referee Andy Haines when he challenged the Exiles’ Fraser Franks six minutes before half-time.

Having also seen Alex Reid sent off against Crewe in his side’s previous outing, Maamria believes his troops aren’t getting a fair crack of the whip.

“I asked (the referee) at half-time if he was sure and he said he was because he (Guthrie) stamped on his (Franks) thigh,” said the Boro boss.

“I’ve spoken to Fraser Franks and he said it was a clash of knees and I watched the footage, and it was a clash of knees.

“Guthrie went to win the ball and they both missed it. His knee clashed with Fraser’s. It wasn’t a red card. It’s not even a free-kick.

“It’s the second red card in a matter of days. The one at Crewe was never a red card either and we don’t want to have this reputation.

“We’re not a dirty team. We’re very fair. We don’t dive around like the opposition do, and we don’t try to get the opposition sent off.

“I’m not going to start teaching my players to dive around and cheat and earn things, like they (Newport) did and Crewe did on Saturday.

“We’re a fair team and we want fair decisions.”

Meanwhile, Newport chief Michael Flynn was happy to defer to the officials’ judgement as far as Guthrie’s dismissal was concerned.

“I didn’t have a good enough view but the referee was right there and Fraser has got a cut on his leg,” he said.

Alex Revell’s late header was enough for 10-man Stevenage to take all three points, with Newport’s Padraig Amond spurning a number of chances.

Scot Bennett also poked wide before Revell powered home from a corner with five minutes to go.

Lamenting his team’s profligacy, Flynn said: “We missed too many chances and we gave away an easy goal. It was as simple as that.

“We weren’t good enough and the longer it went on, you saw their goal coming. We knew it wasn’t our day.

“The fans didn’t stop. They gave up their New Year’s Day and I’m just sorry we couldn’t give them the three points.

“It wasn’t for a lack of trying. The boys did work hard but they just froze (in front of goal).

“Amond (top-scorer on 15 goals) could be on 20 goals already after the last two games.

“If he’s not scoring, we’ve got to keep a clean sheet.”
