Macclesfield boss Sol Campbell hails ‘fantastic draw’ against Tranmere

Sol Campbell was delighted to see his depleted Macclesfield squad pick up a vital point after his battle-weary players toiled away in a 1-1 home draw to Tranmere.

The visitors had been well on top throughout the first half and took the lead after 32 minutes, when Connor Jennings fired in a stunner from distance against his former club.

And their slender lead was wiped out nine minutes later as Koby Arthur slotted in after Macclesfield finally put together their first attacking move of the game.

“Tranmere are flying high, they’re a strong team and they’re doing really well,” said Campbell.

“We didn’t get into the groove in the first half and we gave them too much space all over the pitch. In the second half we were a bit stronger, we just needed to find that final pass.

“It was a fantastic draw for us, we held on, did really well and we were much stronger in the second half.

“We’re fighting for every point, that was a big point for us. We can’t rotate the team that much, we’re down to the bare bones but everybody is working their socks off and the lads have put in a fantastic shift.

“It’s hard over the Christmas period but they’ve been fantastic. I’m a demanding kind of guy though, I will demand more from the players and there is more to come from them.”

Meanwhile, Rovers boss Micky Mellon left the Moss Rose disappointed after his team’s wastefulness saw them pegged back.

“In the first half, we were in complete control. We had plenty of chances and I was disappointed we didn’t go in a couple of goals up,” he said.

“And then, with probably their first effort when they got into our 18-yard box, they got back in the game.

“In the second half, there were as many chances. We got into some good areas and would want that bit of quality or that bit of good fortune.

“But you’ve always got to dig for the positives and they are that we’ve stopped that run of five away defeats.

“Connor Jennings’ was as good a performance as I’ve seen since I’ve been at the football club, I really mean it, he was fantastic, a throwback to the old striker role, it was great to see.

“We’re obviously disappointed on the whole because you want to win every game but we’ll take the point, that’s football.”
