Oxford progressed to the FA Cup third round with a 2-1 win at League One rivals Plymouth.
Cameron Brannagan scored what turned out to be a superb 53rd minute winner, with a thumping strike from the edge of the box, to send United through.
Oxford took the lead after 49 minutes through James Henry from close range on the right flank after being teed up by striker Jamie Mackie, a former Argyle player.
The home side took the game to the wire when Antoni Sarcevic turned in Graham Carey’s pacy cross from the left in 67th minute.
That set up a cracking finish in which late substitute Ruben Lameiras saw his stoppage time rising drive come back off the post.
Earlier Argyle skipper David Fox had his thumping, bouncing shot cleared off the line by United defender Rob Dickie.
Dickie also denied Fox again at 2-1, with another header to keep out a goalbound shot.
