Morecambe veteran Ellison strikes to earn late point against Notts County

A late goal from veteran Kevin Ellison earned Morecambe a point and denied Notts County a much-needed win.
The Magpies looked set for only a fourth win of the season after Kristian Dennis’s 52nd minute opener but the Shrimps hit back with the 39-year-old Ellison bundling the ball over the line from close range after a Morecambe corner caused problems for the visitors’ defence two minutes from time.
Dennis headed the visitors into the lead on 52 minutes with a fine finish as he threw himself at Will Patching’s right wing cross to nod past Mark Halstead at his near post.
Morecambe looked to hit back with Ross Fitzsimons saving well from Liam Mandeville’s curler before Jordan Cranston’s effort slipped inches wide of the left-hand post. But Ellison’s late strike snatched a point.
The only effort of note in a goalless first half came on 15 minutes when A-Jay Leitch-Smith just failed to connect with Luke Conlan’s excellent left-wing cross at the far post.
Both sides struggled to gain any momentum with a lack of quality at either end.
After a slow start, the Magpies threatened briefly when Nathan Thomas saw a shot deflected wide for a corner and Elliot Ward fizzed a half volley over the bar from the edge of the area after the home defence failed to clear a corner with any conviction.
