Southend booked an FA Cup second-round tie at home to League One rivals Barnsley following a 6-2 extra-time win at Crawley Town.
Chris Powell’s side scored four times in extra-time to clinch the tie after Crawley had drawn level from 2-0 down with two goals from Ollie Palmer.
Crawley top scorer Palmer had a goal-bound header parried by goalkeeper Mark Oxley before Southend went in front in the 17th minute.
Defender Josh Doherty, back in the side as one of four changes made by head coach Gabriele Cioffi, put in ball into his own net following a cross by Harry Bunn.
Bunn doubled the advantage on 31 minutes from point-blank range after Crawley stopper Glenn Morris could only parry a header by Simon Cox.
The injury-hit Shrimpers threatened again when former Reading striker Cox rifled into the side netting shortly before the break.
Cox went close again soon after the restart when he had a close-range shot blocked having been set up by Theo Robinson.
But Palmer reduced the deficit with his 10th goal of the season after 56 minutes from close range following a cross by Filipe Morais.
And Palmer struck again after 68 minutes to make it 2-2 with a cool finish from 12 yards.
Cox put Southend back in front only two minutes into extra-time with a deflected shot past Morris.
Defender John White made it 4-2 in the 98th minute by blasting in a Sam Mantom free-kick home from seven yards.
Substitute Mantom and Stephen McLaughlin both found the net in the second period of extra-time as the Shrimpers advanced to the second round for the first time since 2013.
