Taylor treble eases Charlton into FA Cup second round

Lyle Taylor scored a hat-trick as Charlton beat Mansfield 5-0 to progress to the second round of the FA Cup.

The Addicks took the lead in the first round replay through the former AFC Wimbledon striker after 11 minutes when he tapped home from Nicky Ajose’s cross.

CJ Hamilton – scorer of Mansfield’s goal in the previous match between the two sides – could have equalised shortly after but for a superb tackle from Patrick Bauer.

The striker had another glorious chance to score moments later when he stretched to get on the end of Hayden White’s cross, only to see the ball ricochet off the post.

Lee Bowyer’s men made it 2-0 shortly after half-time when Ajose combined with Taylor again, with the former slotting his shot past Robert Olejnik.

Substitute Mark Marshall got the hosts’ third goal with nine minutes remaining when he slid home from a perfectly-timed cross from Toby Stevenson.

Taylor then secured his hat-trick with a delightful chip over Olejnik with five minutes remaining, before Ajose scored Charlton’s fifth in added-time as the Addicks secured a home tie against Doncaster on December 1.
