Blues’ search for a win continues – but Monk keeps the faith

Garry Monk was not downcast despite watching Birmingham fail to find their first win of the Sky Bet Championship season.

The Blues boss was impressed by the performance of his team in the 1-1 draw
against local rivals West Brom, who wasted the chance to move up to third in the table.

Monk remains optimistic about Birmingham’s prospects, despite their dismal playing record, an impending 12-point deduction to be imposed by the EFL and forthcoming trips to high-flying Sheffield United and Leeds.

He said: “We played against a very good side – and for me they are probably the best team we have played this season.

“I could not ask any more of the players in terms of performance and if we continue to play like we did it is only a matter of time before that first win will come our way.

“I was very proud of the performance but we want to give our fans that first victory.

“There were a lot of good performances across the pitch against a side which I think will go back up to the Premier League.

“They have more than enough quality in the squad.  They have really good experience  and have a good blend.”

Birmingham played on the front foot, with Jota catching the eye.

He opened the scoring in the 27th minute only to miss a penalty two minutes later which would have put Birmingham in a commanding position.

Albion, and in particular Dwight Gayle, failed to make a serious impact in the first half and were indebted to some sterling work by Matt Phillips for their 39th-minute equaliser.

Both teams had opportunities to seal the points, with Che Adams and Jota going close for the hosts and Harvey Barnes threatening for Albion.

Monk continued:  “It was a difficult game for us but I thought our organisation for a large part of the game was what we wanted.

“We created a lot of opportunities in the final third and the clear-cut chances, especially the penalty, you have to score.

“With the determination shown by the players, our fortunes will change.”

West Brom manager Darren Moore said: “Birmingham played really well but what impressed me about my team was the discipline of the side.

“Our best spell came in the last 15 minutes when Gareth Barry came on and his range of passes unlocked Birmingham.

“Overall I was pleased with the point as we displayed the character to get back into the game,  as they were difficult opponents.

“Our use of the ball was not as clean and effective as it has been in recent weeks. Whether you put that down to the international break I don’t know but we had too many players off-key.

“When Birmingham capitalised upon the situation they were very aggressive in their style of play. The way they are playing they will soon start winning matches.

“A crucial point for me was the penalty save by Sam Johnstone.  I was pleased for Sam and he is a fantastic young goalkeeper who will only get better.”
