MARCUS RASHFORD has apologised after he was sent-off for headbutting Phil Bardsley.
The Manchester United striker was given his marching orders for the first time in his career after reacting furiously to a late challenge from the Burnley defender.
Marcus Rashford was sent-off for a headbutt at Burnley
Rashford, who is now facing a three-match suspension, had only been on the pitch for TEN MINUTES, after replacing Alexis Sanchez.
The 71st-minute flashpoint came after Bardsley kicked out at the striker from beyond the byline.
Rashford reacted by pushing his forehead against the former United defender, sparking a melee.
Referee Jonathan Moss booked Bardsley, 33, and then gave Rashford a straight red card for violent conduct.
And that will rule him out of Premier League games against Watford and Wolves and United's Carabao Cup clash with Derby.
After the game the 20-year-old took to Twitter to issue a grovelling apology.
Rashford wrote: "Emotions got the better of me, I shouldn't of reacted like that. Sorry to everyone at the club and all the fans #MUFC."
Bardsley was shown a yellow card for his part in the shoving match - but the punishment for England man Rashford was far more severe.
United boss Jose Mourinho branded his hotshot "naive" when quizzed about the explosive incident.
He said: "I don't know what happened. I would say it was naive.
"It was a kid and a very experienced man. Bardsley's been in the game for 20 years and Marcus is a naive boy.
"Harsh? I don't know. You could get a yellow card for each.
"But Moss had a good game, good performance, the same as the two assistants."
Burnley manager Sean Dyche was sympathetic towards the young United forward.
He said: "There's a lot of drama around these things these days.
"Previously everyone would get yellow cards and everyone gets on with it.
"But now we go with what the referee decides."
