Gilmour and Burke on target as Scotland beat South Korea in Toulon

Goals from Billy Gilmour and Oli Burke helped Scotland Under-21s beat South Korea 2-1 in the Toulon Tournament to keep their qualifying hopes alive.

A late Lee Kang-in goal nine minutes from time made the closing stages nervous for Scot Gemmill’s side but they held on for a narrow win.

Chelsea midfielder Gilmour gave the Scots the perfect start with a quality goal in the second minute as he controlled a cross from the left by Glenn Middleton before firing past Min Sung-Jun.

Six minutes later, Scotland led 2-0. Burke, who scored the only goal of the game three days earlier in the 1-0 victory over host nation France, netted his second effort of the tournament.

Taking possession of the ball inside his own half, Burke was allowed to carry the ball forward and –
after beating two Korean defenders – Burke found the back of the net to double his side’s advantage.

Ko Jae-Hyeon forced a good save from Ross Doohan six minutes into the second half as the Koreans looked for a way back into the game.

South Korea, who lost their opening two fixtures 4-1 to France and 2-1 to Togo, got on the scoresheet with nine minutes remaining.

Lee Kang-in’s direct free-kick found its way past Doohan to give his side hope of claiming at least a point from the tournament.

However, despite eight minutes of added-on time, Scotland’s defence held firm to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals.
