Nuno Espirito Santo hails ‘special day’ as Wolves lift Championship trophy

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo admitted it was “fantastic” to get his hands on the Championship trophy following his side’s 0-0 draw against Sheffield Wednesday at Molineux.

The club had sealed the title in their previous game against Bolton and were presented with the trophy in front of their own fans after being frustrated by a Wednesday side, who had inspired goalkeeper Cameron Dawson to thank for their point.

Nuno said: “It is a special day. A fantastic day. When you get something that is material and you can hold on to that is when you feel you are champions.

“I think we were the better team in the competition, more consistent and we deserved it after the hard work of the boys. It is a day that I will always remember.

“All the support throughout the season, here at Molineux and all the stadiums has been fantastic.

“But especially today after the game had finished they celebrated with us it was fantastic day for us in our memory.”

Nuno is now hoping for a win on the final day of the season at Sunderland to break the 100-point barrier and added: “I think we deserved to win against Sheffield Wednesday. We had chances to win and we have one more game to finish well.

“We had to be clinical but the performance was good. Now we have to go and play Sunderland and then we will think about the future [in the Premier League].

“I think this season deserves to end with a win. We must feel the taste of winning because it is what we have been doing all season.”

Wednesday manager Jos Luhukay was full of praise for his side’s performance and the display of Dawson.

He said: “I think that over 90 minutes it was a good game for us.

“At the start of the second half, Wolves had more pressure with two or three good chances but Cammy was fantastic.

“The team was very stable and we had a lot of confidence as well to come here and when we could do, we played football.

“I am satisfied after we played against the best team in the league. To have a draw here is for us a very good result.

“When something was dangerous we had Cammy.

“Cammy was a very good keeper to clear the situations. For a young keeper like Cammy it is important to get experience in a stadium like this. It was a good challenge for him.”

Luhukay also paid tribute to Wolves and added: “When you stay in position number one and have so many wins it is all credit to Wolves.

“They have a fantastic team and it is not easy when you are the favourite for the season and every opponent gives 120 per cent to try and win.”
