Keith Curle believes Carlisle deserved their comeback win against Port Vale

Keith Curle was delighted his Carlisle side secured victory in the first game after he announced he is set to leave the club.

Carlisle came from behind to beat 10-man Port Vale 2-1 in Curle’s penultimate game as manager.

Curle, who is leaving the club at the end of the season, saw second-half strikes from Ashley Nadesan and Hallam Hope cancel out Dior Angus’ opener.

“It was important we went out and put a performance on,” said Curle.

“The victory was well-earned today and we certainly deserved it from the second-half showing.

“There’s a lot of emotions and distractions that went on in the week, obviously after what has happened.

“That’s diluted some of the potential whispers but it was important everyone was made aware of what was happening.

“It’s important that this club embraces the next regime.

“Every coach will have different ideas.

“This club needs to give the manager an ethos and platform about how he wants to play and get results.

“I’ve had great support and I’m sure the next person who takes the reins will get similar support.”

After a slow start, Vale debutant Angus tapped in from a couple of yards out on  34 minutes after an initial effort was parried into the air by Carlisle stopper Jack Bonham.

Minutes later the visitors were indebted to Bonham who pulled off a top save to keep out Tom Pope’s header.

The hosts were made to pay for that miss after the restart when the Cumbrians drew level through Nadesan. A cross was deflected into his path and he drilled a superb effort into the top corner.

Carlisle then went in front on 70 minutes when substitute Hope fired home Jamie Devitt’s cross just four minutes after coming on.

To compound the hosts’ misery, Anthony Kay was sent off with five minutes remaining for violent conduct.

Vale chief Neil Aspin said he has a busy summer ahead, insisting he wants a squad overhaul.

“The last two weeks, we haven’t been good enough and today was an extension of that,” said Aspin.

“It reiterates all the work we need to do to turn it around

“I’m pleased we’re at the end of the season because it’s been very disappointing.

“I feel embarrassed as a manager to be signing autographs and getting applause.

“Because we need to get a better team out, which is what the fans want to see.

“There’s a lot of hard work ahead.

“The season might be ending, but for me it’s only the beginning.

“We don’t want to be in this position again so the hard work starts now.”
