Cowley’s praise as Lincoln’s journey towards promotion continues

Lincoln City boss Danny Cowley praised his side for playing through the pain barrier during their impressive 4-2 win at Coventry City.
The Imps led 3-2 at the break before Lee Frecklington made the game safe on 67 minutes.
The visitors got off to a perfect start when Matt Rhead scored with a half volley after just 53 seconds.
The Sky Blues levelled through Tom Bayliss’ well taken finish in the 16th minute, before Ollie Palmer restored Lincoln’s lead in the 38th minute.
Coventry levelled again seconds later when Jordan Shipley turned home a Bayliss cross.
Palmer got his second a minute before the break when he pounced on a rebound.
And it was game over when Frecklington rounded off a brilliant counter attack to wrap up the points.
Cowley said: “It was a really good win. We have a lot of niggles and aches and pains in the team right now and it was a tough week building up to the game.
“To play with the desire and fitness that they did was superb.
“We have scored two unbelievable goals, the first two are good enough to win any match.
“To concede the second was very disappointing, it was one of the worst we have conceded under me.
“The response and the timing of our third goal took the energy out of Coventry and we are thrilled with the response.
“This is another step in our journey, Coventry are a really good team but we did not allow them to play at their best.
“We will probably have to see Coventry again if we are to get where we want to get.
“Our fans were tremendous tonight, it was a really good night for Lincoln City.”
But Coventry City boss Mark Robins slammed the lack of quality in his side’s defending.
“Their first goal was out of the blue, It was a good goal and I can sort of accept it,” he said.
“But the other three were poor from our point of view and easily stoppable.
“They scored three goals where we did not deal with the threat or the second ball.
“Matt Rhead has bullied our two centre halves and that is the disappointment.
“It is like playing against the old Wimbledon, but if you can’t stop that then you shouldn’t be playing football.
“The third goal for them is a really poor goal. The ball has been headed back in and we have not defended anything.
“We had a similar chance and Lincoln get their blocks in, you expect your defenders to get blocks in but we did not do that.
“Every time we get a chance to move forward we turn it down and do things the hard way and that’s the big disappointment.”
