Alex Mowatt missed a penalty and was then sent off as new Oxford manager Karl Robinson watched his side lose 3-0 to Portsmouth at Fratton Park.
Kal Naismith gave Pompey the lead after just five minutes when Connor Ronan’s corner was headed back across the face of goal before being prodded in by the 26-year-old.
Oxford came close to equalising in the 21st minute when James Henry’s shot from outside the box took a deflection before crashing against the crossbar.
And in the 61st minute The U’s were awarded a penalty when Matt Clarke fouled Rob Dickie, but Mowatt could only fire the spot-kick against the post.
The 23-year-old was then given a straight red card for swinging an arm at Pompey’s Nathan Thompson, who appeared to taunt Mowatt after missing the spot-kick.
Pitman doubled the home side’s lead in the 69th minute when he fired Jamal Lowe’s cross into the roof of the net.
Pompey’s rout was completed with 10 minutes to go when Lowe rounded goalkeeper Simon Eastwood before squaring for Pitman.
